Will My Teeth Rot Underneath Porcelain Veneers?

Men and women can improve their smiles, mask minor cosmetic issues, and enhance their overall oral health with customized porcelain veneers. Dr. Timothy Luong is highly trained in the diagnostics and treatment of oral health conditions. Ascend Dental Studio offers patients throughout Henderson, NV porcelain veneers to beautify their smiles and boost their self-confidence.

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin covers that are carefully placed over the front of your teeth to hide chipped, crooked, cracked, discolored, misaligned, unevenly spaced, or decayed teeth. Dr. Timothy Luong performs a full oral assessment to determine if porcelain veneers are right for you and customize your veneers for an optimal, natural-looking fit.

What are the benefits of using porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers provide men and women with multiple benefits, including:

• Masking stained, decayed, cracked, or chipped teeth
• A whiter, more even smile
• A natural-looking smile

Porcelain veneers are durable, stain-resistant, and easy to maintain and clean during your normal dental hygiene routine.

Am I an ideal candidate for porcelain veneers?

If you have minor cosmetic issues, like stained, cracked, chipped, or decayed teeth, you may be a viable candidate for porcelain veneers. Dr. Lawler conducts thorough initial exams to determine if you can safely wear porcelain veneers. Prospective patients who have periodontal disease or a history of clenching or teeth-grinding may not be suitable candidates.

What is the treatment process like?

Obtaining customized porcelain veneers generally takes two appointments. During the first visit, Dr. Lawler will prepare your teeth by shaving off a thin layer of enamel so that the final porcelain veneers fit evenly across the teeth. Afterward, she will create a physical model and collect a digital impression of your teeth, which are both sent over to the dental lab to develop your customized veneers.

While waiting for your second appointment, you’ll be fitted with temporary veneers to protect your exposed teeth. The second appointment is usually scheduled or approximately two weeks later, when Dr. Lawler will perform your final fitting and make minor adjustments as needed.

Is there any recovery time after placing porcelain veneers?

After your final fitting, you may resume normal daily activities since porcelain veneers require no anesthesia. Patients should expect some sensitivity to hot and cold for the first day or so, which resolves on its own. To add to the life of your new porcelain veneers, avoid foods that are hard to chew, including hard candies, taffy, jerky, and gum.

Will my teeth rot underneath porcelain veneers?

If patients follow a healthy dental hygiene routine, there is minimal risk for the teeth under your porcelain veneers to rot. Your routine should include:

• Using floss, mouthwash, and toothpaste to properly clean your teeth and veneers
• Avoid high staining foods or substances, such as beer and tobacco
• Adhere to your veneer hygiene routine recommended by Dr. Lawler during your second appointment
• Attend regular dental follow-ups to inspect your veneers, gums, and teeth

How long do porcelain veneers last?

If you care for your veneers and follow appropriate hygiene practices, your porcelain veneers can potentially last 10 – 15 years.
