How do veneers help your smile?

Dental veneers offer patients the opportunity to address a wide variety of concerns with a single solution. These thin porcelain “shells” are custom-made to fit over the patient’s natural tooth, creating a brighter, complete, and more even smile. Some of the most common cosmetic concerns that can be improved or corrected with porcelain dental veneers include:

• Chipped tooth
• Gap between teeth
• Uneven tooth length
• Short teeth
• Small teeth
• Yellow teeth
• Dull teeth
• Stained teeth

How are veneers attached to your teeth?

In most cases, the process of getting dental veneers is completed in a series of appointments. To begin, Dr. Timothy Luong will perform a thorough examination to assess your overall oral health and evaluate your cosmetic concerns. If you are found to be a good candidate for porcelain veneers, Dr. Timothy Luong will proceed to prepare your teeth for treatment, which involves removing a portion of the tooth’s natural enamel.

This allows the veneers to sit smoothly and evenly over the tooth’s surface. Once an impression of your mouth has been made, Dr. Timothy Luong will apply temporary veneers to protect your teeth and give you a more natural look while your long-term veneers are being custom-created in the lab.

After about two weeks, you will return to the office to have your temporary veneers removed and your porcelain veneers set in place with a bonding agent.

How much can veneers be adjusted after they’re already on?

Once veneers have been bonded to the tooth, they should not shift or move, though minor adjustments can be made to ensure proper fit, bite, alignment, and appearance. After assessing the fit and comfort, Dr. Timothy Luong may slightly reduce or refine certain edges of the veneers. In rare cases, a veneer may be removed and/or replaced if needed.

Patients should keep in mind that any change to the look and feel of their teeth can take some getting used to. For some patients, it can take several weeks to adjust to having veneers, though it should not cause pain or significant discomfort. If you are experiencing pain or difficulty chewing even after initial adjustments have been made to your veneers, Dr. Timothy Luong can make further alterations to alleviate these symptoms.

Once the proper fit and form have been achieved, patients can enjoy their veneers for up to 10 – 15 years with appropriate care and hygiene.
